Abby's Attic Sewing & Craft Studio
9815 Culebra Rd, Ste 112, San Antonio, Texas 78251
We will be cutting and assembling purses for Sew Powerful, an organization that helps young girls in Zambia, Africa, continue to attend school during their menstrual cycles. Girls miss out on about 30% of their education throughout their childhood due to the stigma surrounding menstruation. The purses allow the girls to bring self-care items to school without embarrassment. Last year the organization received 3,000 purses but their goal is usually about 110% higher than that.
Purse construction is one component and done by volunteers around the world (including Abby's Attic!). Another component is that the mothers in the village is Lukasa, Zambia, have been taught to sew school uniforms and reusable fabric sanitary pads, and their new-found sewing skills allow them to earn an income-- sometimes the first money these women have ever earned. This entire program allows women and girls to rise out of abject poverty and get an education, and build self-worth. The entire village gets educated on the value of school, waiting to have children until school is completed, HIV education, etc. Many of these girls have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS.
With the help of some students, the cutting and assembly of these purses will be lighting quick and volunteers will learn how to sew for free, to boot!
