UNLOCKING THE LOCKS
BANDHA WORKSHOP
Bandha is often defined as “lock”, but actually it can be more of an “unlocking”. A quote from Moola Bandha: The Master Key states “…it is said that by locking or contracting certain muscles on the physical level a subtle process of ‘unlocking’ goes on simultaneously on mental and pranic levels.” The subtle acting of locking can lead to an unlocking of energy, potential, acceptance and deep love.
We often think that by using the bandhas properly in asana practice that we will be able to float, have that inner strength, master the seemingly impossible postures. While that may be true in some cases, it is really in the letting go of our perception of what is “right” and finding a place where there is no internal battle or hardening or over-doing.
There are many practices to try to specifically locate and activate the bandhas but Jessica will show is that by simply practicing, and sometimes starting over again, relearning, and building new connections with your breath, you can relax, soften and actually find more strength inside of you. The law of physics says that once the weight is close to balance on a single point, effortlessness is found. It’s the effortlessness that is the key. We want to try to master effortlessness in all asanas that we do, especially the difficult ones.
Jessica’s approach to this workshop will be to compliment the Ashtanga teachings by sharing some of the tools she developed over time to assist in the uncovering of the bandha’s.
· She will go over the anatomical and physiological aspects of mula bandha and uddiyana bandhas as well as the benefits of the bandhas in practice and in every day life.
· We will look at how gravity and finding our center “pivot point” can help us understand bandhas.
· We will also attempt to access the mula bandha and udiyanna bandha through the asana practice, specifically focusing on certain asanas that might make that connection more conscious.
· We will explore finding your center when you’re upside down, through a variety of arm and hand balances.

HEALING THROUGH PRACTICE
WORKSHOP
It is not uncommon to experience some form of injury as a result of regular practice. Often we apply our “bad habits” to our asanas and apply too much effort at times. Sometimes we refuse to listen to our bodies when we have some small pain and then are forced to take a break once the issue has worsened. Sometimes it is simply the repeated action that eventually wears us out or causes inflammation.
This session will explore some essential practices that we can do in order to avoid injury or heal from it. This will be an interactive session where we can share stories and look at options for healing. We can still practice daily but with a different focus.
Jessica will share the story of her major spinal injury and how she managed the very severe condition and how she realized she was not her diagnosis. The key is maintaining a life without pain. That is what yoga is supposed to give us and sometimes we forget that.

Jessica started her Ashtanga Yoga practice in 1994. Since 2001, she has made several trips to Mysore, India, to study with Guruji, Sharath and Saraswati and has been granted a Teaching Authorization Certificate (Level 2) from the KPJAYI in Mysore.
