The Queer Corazones de Esperanza will be hosting the second annual “Son Tus Niños También: Trans Kids Back to School,” at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center. It will be held on Saturday, August 26th from 12-3pm @ 922 San Pedro Ave. 78212.
The purpose of the event is to facilitate a conversation between parents, their children, and teachers on how best to include, respect, and protect trans youth in schools. Given the current political dialogue and harmful legislation, we want to create a safe space to share the experiences, concerns, and visions of parents of trans kids and trans individuals to get a perspective of what is happening here in San Antonio.
Organizations that have resource tables are arriving early to set up their tables. Resource tables will be available starting at 11am before the Speaker Program which begins at 12pm.
The event will consist of a legislative update on the issues affecting trans youth by the ACLU, a discussion panel led by parents of trans kids, and resource tables from various organizations that support the wellbeing of trans youth.
The purpose of the parent panel is to share the true stories/experiences of Trans children and their parents in the context of US schools and society as well as to hear follow up stories from parents and kids that were part of Trans Kids Back to School 2016. The event will take place after school has already started in August 2017, so we will also be able to hear about any problems they may have already begun to experience. Panelists will talk about the legal rights of trans children and their parents, and procedures for school teachers and administrators. This panel will discuss updates on how the new laws passed by the Texas legislature affect trans kids in schools.
Sponsored by Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, the San Antonio Gender Association, Lulac 22198 — Orgullo de San Antonio and the Queer Corazones de Esperanza.
This is a free event.
