Going a decade strong, Johnny P and The Wiseguys is six-piece swing station tuned in to the late 50s Rat Pack and visions of Vegas nightclubs, where jazz and entertainment intersect. “Me being loose, cracking one-liners, it really breaks the ice with people who may not be familiar with jazz,” says front man and trumpeter Johnny Panzarella, or Johnny P. While the mood is playful as the ensemble churns through swing standards and complex Latin arrangements, the chops on Johnny and the rest of his ensemble are no joke.
Panzarella grew up Italian in NYC, hanging with his pops and pals in the basement of rock ‘n’ roll rehearsals, while upstairs Frankie and Dean Martin were rollin’ from his grandparents’ jukebox. “We
take bits and pieces of those guys and incorporate them into our act, try to echo that sound,” Panzarella said.
The outfit is currently chopping away at their second studio album, a mix of original tunes and original arrangements of standards, which is due out in spring of 2018.
