In a collaboration of the McNay and The Public Theater of San Antonio in honor of Black History Month, David Casteal offers a powerful performance as York, an enslaved man on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Blending first-person narration with both African drumming and traditional Native American drum recordings, this performance recognizes York’s challenges and accomplishments. Not until 2001, 200 years after the expedition, was York recognized as a member of the Corps of Discovery and awarded the rank of Honorary Sergeant.
NOTE: the second performance, originally scheduled for Friday, February 16, has been canceled.
Space is limited. Fee (includes Museum admission): $10; students 19 and under free. PERFORMANCES Register online at thepublicsa.org/special-events or call (210)733-7258.
